Galter LifeCenter Masters Swim Team Takes Third Place at State Meet

Congratulations to the Swedish Fish, the masters swimming team at Galter LifeCenter for capturing third place in the recent Illinois State meet.

More than 60 swimmers competed on the Swedish Fish team which also celebrated its 10th anniversary this year.


“We're very proud of the entire team and the great results they achieved at the state meet,” said Billy Cordero, Head Coach of Swedish Fish Masters team which has 82 masters swimmers in total who train at Galter LifeCenter.


At the recent Illinois State meet the women team placed second, while the men earned fourth for a combined third place overall team finish. There were 52 teams from across Illinois competing at the prestigious meet. The Swedish Fish team participated in an impressive 357 individual swims, 58 relays and scored 2326 points.

In addition to the team award, Swedish Fish Tracy Lord was re-elected Vice Chair of Illinois Masters Swimming. She also received the John Sloan Service Award from Illinois Masters Swimming for her volunteerism, leadership, sportsmanship and service to the Swedish Fish Masters Team.  She was nominated by her team mates and voted for by the board of directors. 

Coaches

It was also the third year in a row that the Swedish Fish team won an award from the Illinois State Masters board of Directors. Other recent awards include:

  • 2014 – Billy Cordero -  Coach of the Year
  • 2015 – Peter Marcy – Coach of the Year (first time back-to-back years same team won that award)

Many Swedish Covenant Hospital and Galter LifeCenter employees participated in the meet as members of the Swedish Fish team.  Some of these employee highlights include:

  • Ann Mcdermott was 2nd in 400 IM, 4th in 100 IM, 2nd in 100 fly, and 3rd in 200 IM.
  • Deb Drewke was 2nd in 400 IM, 5th in 200 Free, 3rd in 100 fly and 6th in 100 back.
  • Matt Wever (Coach) - 5th in 100 fly, 5th in 50 free, 3rd in 50 back, 6th in 100 free, 5th in 50 fly.
  • Connor Christie (Coach) - 4th in 50 and 100 breaststroke.  
  • The 4 x 100 free relay with Connor Christie, Matt Wever, Grant Sutton (Coach) and Nick Gehl were state champions.
